If you want to earn extra money outside your normal 9 to 5, a side job may be the answer. Side jobs are usually part-time jobs that fit your schedule, skills and lifestyle. Finding the right side job often depends on your interests and how much time and energy you can devote to your “side gig”.
The greater freedom of telecommuting these days has opened the door to making money during off-hours from almost anywhere. Some side hustles require you to have certain skills, education and experience, while others are relatively easy to get started with even without previous experience.
However, not all side jobs are the same – some offer the possibility of a substantial income and others do not. Read on to find out about six side hustles that you can start right now and earn a lot of money.
1. Freelance Copywriter
Not everyone is suited to work as a freelance copywriter, but if you have strong writing skills, you can earn good money by creating content for websites and other media.
As a “freelancer,” you can take on as much work as you want, depending on your clients and schedule. Of course, you’ll have to contend with submission deadlines, editing, and other demands, so schedule just enough work to fit your time.
The most important first step is to actually start. It may be hard at the beggining, but as you continue to write on, you will get better and people will start noticing you. Once you build up a sufficient portfolio, you won’t have problems with finding clients.
As your copywriting bussiness grows, you may attract bigger, better paying clients, with which you will be able to negotiate about your prices. Since you’re a freelancer, the only person you answer to is yourself.
2. Virtual assistant
You don’t have to live near a business or individual to provide your services to them. A virtual assistant is one of the most in-demand side hustles nowadays. Almost every single bigger bussiness is looking for someone to do all their tedious stuff.
Your task will basically be to do the things your higher-ups are to busy to do. Anything from answering phone calls and responding to emails, to booking travel and scheduling appointments.
Virtual assistants determine which services they provide, as well as their rates. You can find virtual assistant jobs through job search websites, but there are also virtual assistant networks that you can join to find work.
3. Graphic designer
Almost every business needs a graphic designer. If you have skills in graphic design, you can make great money with a freelance side job. Services like Fiverr and Upwork can connect you with clients looking for design work for long-term or one-off projects.
Keep in mind that jobs on these sites often go to the lowest bidder, so this may not be the best way to make significant money.
Another way to use your graphic design skills is to create print materials and other digital products that you can sell online. Plus, you can make passive income from the same designs several times over.
4. Social Media Manager
Social media is a must for anyone running a business in 2023. You can make a living as a social media manager, working with businesses or individuals to create social media content, schedule posts, respond to comments, and other tasks.
Other tasks include interpreting analytics data to increase follower engagement, creating marketing campaigns, collaborating with other creators or influencers, and more.
5. Shared rides
If you own a car and have a driving licence, you can use it to earn extra money as a rideshare driver. One of the biggest advantages of working as a driver for Uber, Lyft, or other ridesharing companies is that it’s one of the few jobs you can do anytime, anywhere. People need rides around the clock, especially if they live near major cities or in high traffic areas.
Carpool drivers don’t have a set work schedule to keep. You can choose your own hours and work when you want. However, limited time is your enemy, so there is a cap on how much you can earn as a rideshare driver.
Apply your photography skills as a freelance photographer. There are several ways to earn money from photography. You can earn by providing personal photography services at weddings, engagements and other events.
If you’d like to earn more by selling photos, we might have the article just for you.
Sites that aggregate the photos of freelancers then pay photographers for their photos. You will usually get paid for downloading the image provided. You can also make money by teaching others how to take better photographs through workshops or by creating an online course.
7. Online language teacher
You probably know at least one language (most likely english). Well, even that can become a usefull skill. It’s quite simple – find someone who doesn’t understand the language you do, and teach them. There are several sites where you can join and become a language tutor.
This could also help you in the future, because if you ever want to earn a teaching/tutoring heavy job, nothing will look better on your resume, than experience in the field.
8. Pet/house sitter
Just like with babysitting, your job would be to take care of someones house or their pet while they are away. Unlike babysitting though, this does not require your constant attention and can be done while you do other things (like some other side jobs, for example).
Your biggest task will be to water the plants, maybe take the dogs for a walk or feed the fish in the aquarium. Of course a task this simple may not yield as much money, but it’s still something to consider.
9. Mystery shopper
Now this side job sounds a lot cooler than what it actually means. No, you won’t be going to mystery shops or buy mysterious items. Your task is to simply go to a store, walk around for a while, buy some things and when you return home, complete a short survey.
These surveys are usually about the state of the store, or the state of the staff. But be carefull, because there may be many scam sites out there, which will just make you shop for things you probably didn’t even want, and leave you with a slightly lighter wallet.
10. House painter
You might be thinking that you have to be a professional painter to actually get this job. Well, you’re only partly correct. Yes, you should know how to work with paint, but painting houses is a lot different that painting on a canvas. Mainly, you ususally have only one or two colours, so you don’t really have to worry about as many things as a portrait painter for example.
You mostly have to worry about getting the paint only where it’s needed and making it in a singular, equal level.
11. Delivery driver
Do you have a driving license? If yes, you have basically everything this job needs. This one is really simple. There are several sites where you can register to deliver food, packages, or someonse groceries. You just get the package, and drive it where it needs to go.
You may even expand into becoming a rideshare/uber driver, but we’ve talked about this slightly higher.
12. Do other peoples chores
This one also isn’t exactly a brain-teaser. You simply look for people to lazy to mow their own lawn, and mow it for them. Or someone might want their car cleaned after their family trip, but just doesn’t have the time to do it themself. Well, that’s where you come in.
You basically become a handyman. Many people will appreciate your work, especially if you stay around your neighbourhood. After some time, people may even become sort of dependent on you and your services. Then you might start setting your own prices and even be able to negotiate with your clients.
